The primary race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is a good example for this point. Throughout the year before the first primary, Hillary led Obama in all surveys, sometimes by up to 30%. The early lead was purely based on awareness and evaporated state by state within a few weeks prior to the respective elections.
